Is it possible to place a view as a subview of another custom/ui.View in the graphical UI editor?

Yes, you'd have to select "Subviews…" from the editing menu (after selecting the view you want to embed another view in).

@omz, feeling stupid here, but... ”Editing menu” is the one with ”i” in a circle, right? I cannot find a ”Subviews” option in there. (I am on an iPhone, cannot get to the iPad right now.)
