Easier way to enter single quote in search field ?

upwart

When I need to search for a string, starting with a single quote, I can’t do that easiliy because the symbol above/behind the k key is not a real single quote but a kind of forward quote, that’s not accepted as the true quote (really vertical). Of course, I can hold the ‘ for a while, but’s that not ve,ry convenenient.
When entering code, there’s no problem, because the extra rows of keys contain a proper single quote.

Does anyone know a shortcut/trick/setting to be able to use the k/‘ directly in searches?

@upwart If you are in QWERTY, push 123 then single quote, no?

JonB

on ipad, long pressing comma/exclamation point pops up a single quote.

the other option is, in settings app to create a shortcut. for instance, typing the forward quote would be a shortcut for single quote.

@cvp
When I do that I get the forward quote, not the single quote.

@JonB
I didn't know about the long press of comma/exclamation mark. It works perfectly!
Making a shortcut for the forward quote does not seem to work.

Thanks!

@upwart when I try to find this quote, it finds all quotes used for strings...

@cvp
Do you mean the ‘ behind the k key?
On my iPad that gives ‘ and not ' that only can get with a long press and then select that single quote.
Is that what you mean? Or do you have another ‘trick’?

cvp

@upwart it is very strange because the quote pressed is not the quote displayed.
Query, after 123, behind the k

upwart

@cvp
That’s weird.
I see that you have multiple language keyboard. I had only the Engish/US installed and there the ‘ key returns a ‘ (so not right).
I just tried the Engish/UK and the German keyboard, but still the same result.
What keyboard (language) do you use?

cvp

@upwart Belgian French, Belgian Dutch, US English and Emoticon

cvp

@upwart but At this moment I use USEnglish just before pressing the 123 key

make sure you have smart quotes turned off in ios keyboard settings

cvp

@JonB My settings are in French and "Ponctuation intelligente" is off. I suppose it is what you call smart quotes.

upwart

@cvp , @JonB
It was all about Smart Punctuation, which should be off.
That's why I hate iOS so much: nothing is customizable, only some crazy feautures. Glad Steve Jobs doesn't contribute anymore ...
