In the forum what is the badge icon for? I always have notifications there but they seem random. The topics they point to seem like nothing I have had to do with. I cannot seem to stop them.

So if any new topic is created across the forum it increments the badge number?

that is correct. It's an unread count.

also, you can disable updates from different sections. by going to that section eg the editorial forum, and there's an "ignore" button in the upper right.

After this comment, I have been using the unread screen. It's very handy. Easy to miss some comments, especially if a day of a lot of comments
