If Pythonista had a developers conference, what city should it be?

Phuket2

PDC, "Pythonista Developers Conference" until @omz names it himself. I think there should be one. I know python has pycon or something like that, but the natural evolution of a program like this is that it should have its own annual gathering! I Would love to meet all the guys on this site at such an event. If such an event should occur, it would make sense to me that the first event would be done in omz's home City , or close by , first. Just out of respect. Subsequent years , could be held in different countries.
As omz is doing all the work, he should not be called upon to do any organisation. That would be up to us, the enthusiastic users. But would want to schedule the event so omz had time that he could attend and speak/present!

I would happily be one of the organisers. I have been involved in many such events, even in recent years. Not programming , but the organisation of between 60-350 guys coming together from all around the world , normally 4-5 days. I am a member of another international club. You will laugh, but we play dice. It's not about gambling! Just expats meeting up having a great time. But regardless, I have experience with this.

Why did I write this? I want people to think about having annual get together to discuss all issues related to Pythonista, meet all the guys. Hear omz's vision for the future etc...
but It needs someone to start talking about it
In my honest opinion I think omz will be too modest to get this sort of thing going. We need to plant the seeds. But at the same time we have make sure he has control over it. Meaning that agenda's , names/acronyms , etc are approved by him at the same time not burdening him with all the minor details. As long as his vision is being represented, and he is being briefed I think it could work well.
I said it the nice way in the last paragraph. The hard and direct way is to say not to hijack omz's program for our own benefit!

ccc

Berlin!!

Phuket2

Does omz live in Berlin or in Norway/Oslo?

omz

Haha, no, I live in Berlin, though you're right that Ole is a Scandinavian name (they're kinda popular in Germany, probably because of Astrid Lindgren, Ikea, or both).

Webmaster4o

How 'bout we have it in New York! :)

Phuket2

Ok, Berlin it is then! Are you open to the idea @omz ?

Phuket2

@Webmaster4o , should be the home country first! In my experience after that, it works like the Olympics, cites put forward a proposal, they are reviewed. But that city takes on the majority of the organisation, but in the early days other people will come and help. Then you have sort of rule, every 4 years has to go back to the home city (Berlin) in this case. For it to be successful you need to build up a charter. Make it predictable and well organised.

Webmaster4o

Yep. As a 13-year old living in the U.S., I'm not gonna make it until it's in New York. Oh well.

omz

Are you open to the idea @omz ?

Sure, I'd be there if it's somewhere I can travel easily (i.e. within Europe).

To be honest, I have my doubts if the community is big enough for something like this, but I'm a natural pessimist, so don't listen to me. ;)

Webmaster4o

If it ends up happening, livestream it. I'll watch.

Phuket2

@omz , your coding /app, whatever want you call it tells me you are not a persimist. Far from it. I am a over the top optimist. I believe in the theme of the film 'field of dreams'. If you build it they will come. You have built it. And we are coming.
Ole, are you ready to have a coffee or a beer with me in Berlin in 2 or 3 days? I am serious. If you have time I will come and have a coffee or beer with you, shake your hand, and let you know I am not full of shit. I will only stay one day or so, because I have a very important meeting in thailand 1st sept.

Phuket2

@Webmaster4o, in previous clubs I have been in, we make a scholarship fund for the youth or up and coming in the club. A lot of people put in a little money to sponsor someone to attend these events. So it could possible for you to attended an event like this, if we get a scholarship into the charter. Everything is possible

techteej

@Webmaster4o In the same boat, except 17 ;)

Phuket2

@techteej , but reach for the sky.... Nothing is out of your reach. Good python programmers are in the top 3 or 4 best paid programmers according to what I have read. I mean good ones. But regardless, my advise would always have integrity in what you do. Long term it will pay off. Just being a gun for fire so to speak, is not always the best. Loyalty, integrity , attention to detail In my mind will get you further in you career , does not matter what language you end up programming in.

Phuket2

@ccc, are you up for a coffee in Berlin in about 3 days? I will not drink coffee , but you can ;) @Jonb , I have no idea where you are stationed , you have time to join ?

Phuket2

Ok, just after midnight for me here now, so will go do some shopping then sleep :) I was out early today :) but get ready for me @omz. Just one coffee

Webmaster4o

@techteej I'm almost 14, but still the youngest here I think.

Phuket2

@omz, I won't be there in 3 days for coffee. My thai friend is going to come with me, he has never been out of Thailand before, always told him I would take him on a trip one day. I also would prefer not to travel alone :) but it will take 10 days or so before he will get a visa. I have obligations in Thailand until the 12th sept, so will go over sometime close after that. Just hope you have time for a coffee that's all. Will let you know once we have the tickets.
If for some reason you are not there or have no time, I have a lot of friends to catch up with in Europe, so will be no problem either way.

omz

@Phuket2 Okay, I'm not in town this weekend (two family birthdays), so that probably wouldn't have worked out anyway – if you were actually serious – taking an intercontinental flight just to have some coffee really doesn't seem worth it... But if you're somewhere near Berlin for vacation or something, let me know, so we can have a coffee/beer or two.

Phuket2

Ok, that was lucky then. But I was serious. But I was a little drunk, it didn't make a whole lot of sense to come for a day or 2 when I woke up :) but no doubt about it. Coming to Europe around 14th sept. Will go to Denmark first, then will communicate with you and take a flight to Belgium if you are available. Only 56min flight. Believe me, spent a few hours on this already today with my thai friend getting his visa my travel agent and the visa agent. No reason for me to go to Europe as I see most my friends here in Thailand, coming to meet you. Maybe some of the other guys close by, might like to come and meet up for a drink/dinner also. But in the next 3 days or so, I will have it all nailed down and will issue tickets. The Belgium flight will be a side trip out of Copenhagen, so I will leave that flexible. We are thinking about 6 or 7 days in Copenhagen. So have room to move and fit in with you.
Oh, my friend is just a friend. Just a very good one. Not that it matters, but I am only into women.

Phuket2

@omz

Phuket2

Our dates have been pushed back to the 22nd now :( we have flights booked for the 22nd, but not issued yet. Just super hard to get visa's for Thai people to Europe. As we are going to Denmark as our base, he needs a schengen visa....The saga continues. Been a lot of work. But will get there :)

omz

Good luck with the visa! Copenhagen is quite beautiful (long time since I've been there though).

Phuket2

@omz , thanks. Have been more problems with the visa, but It's ok, we submitted some extra info they requested last night. I think it will go through because they ask for the extra info, in a very nice way. But lot of us take for granted how easy is it travel around the world. For some nationalities not so easy! Being Australian, pretty easy for me to go around the world with a few exceptions. I have done it many times.

Phuket2

Still on track. My thai friend had 2 phone interviews today. First with a thai person then with a Danish person. I feel confident that he will get his visa.

Phuket2

@omz , success! My Thai Friend (gaew) was advised today he got his Visa! So will arrive Denmark 22nd sept in the morning flying back to Thailand 29th sept. So will try to make a time to fly to Berlin to visit with you, if you have time. I will not book the flight to Berlin in Thailand. Easy to get a flight ticket in denmark to Berlin. So then can be very flexible and fit in with your schedule.

omz

@Phuket2 Awesome!

Phuket2

@omz , thanks . It really is great. His first time out of Thailand. I Just put on Facebook, so many Danish friends ready to meet us. But I am really looking fwd to meet you.

Phuket2

Wow getting ready for a 7 day trip is the same as going for 1 month. I have no cold weather clothes :). Getting the tailor to make me 2 sports jackets. I had to but new jeans and shoes. New travelling luggage etc etc ;). Oh well, will be good to get a short break from Thailand. Been some years since I have travelled outside South East Asia. It's been a struggle, But just about all done now.
No ticket to Berlin, but will just get in Denmark.

Phuket2

Have a booking at Noma Resturant at noon on the 23rd sept. if anyone wants to join :) a week ago they opened up bookings for December. I think 2nd best Resturant in the world this year, been no.1 for 3 or four years prior. Was one of the top things I really wanted to try and do when in Denmark.

Phuket2

Oppps, Noma, only number 3 this year. Still it will be great

Phuket2

In demark now drinking with friends. Noma tomorrow :)

ccc

Did Noma live up to your expectations? Did you get down to Berlin? Did you drink the Danes under the table? Photos?!?

Phuket2

Hi @ccc. Just flew back into Thailand early this morning. We gained 5hrs On the way over, but lost them on the way back :(
Noma, was great. The food was so so to not so great, the experience was 1st class though. The presentation of the food was exceptional, the staff excellent and so engaging in the experience. We had 19 courses, with a wine pairing for each course. There were 8 of us.so while it's very expensive, as a one time thing well worth it.
Let's say, most the time I held my own with the Danes drinking. Had to help a lot of them into taxis so they would actually make it home :) But was a fantastic holiday. I didn't make it to Berlin, but come up with a good compromise. So the whole trip a sucess. All started from one slightly drunk comment :)
Been in the bar for 40mins now. I have to get the energy to attend a good friends birthday here in Pattaya tonight. Feeling wasted at the moment, the trip back was hard. But I will be ready to party. I have about 4 hours to get into shape. I can do it! Again, for me a big thumbs up for Noma

Tizzy

Wish I had been following this, I was in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Cologne just about a month ago. Not Berlin, but could have easily made it out there.

Phuket2

@Tizzy , would have been good. We ended up meeting in Copenhagen not Berlin. Same same but different :)
I have been looking at https://us.pycon.org/2016/.
Could be a place for people to meet up at....

I get so frustrated here in Pattaya Thailand, while they almost have everything here, I can't find a Python programmer to sit down and talk with. Share ideas etc... One of my good Danish friends son will be visiting me this FeB, he is a very smart guy and learning Python now. So I hope I can talk with him about Python when he comes :)

ccc

If you get to the big city during one of the ThaiPy meetups, you should check out http://www.meetup.com/ThaiPy-Bangkok-Python-Meetup

Webmaster4o

I might be able to get to pycon in the US. Oregon is just about the farthest state from where I am in the country, but it's no Berlin.

ccc

@Webmaster4o , If you were willing to give a presentation at PyCon then the conference organizers would probably consider giving you financial aid because your age and unique perspective. The PSF are bending over backwards to show how the Python community is supporting diversity. Hopefully Pythonista v1.6 will be shipping by May of 2016 ;-) so you would have tons of new stuff to show off. You could lift as much as you want from my EuroPython 2014 pitch and add your own unique stuff to that. It would be a great way to spread the word about Pythonista to a wider audience. Time is limited to put in a proposal but you should really consider going for it.

ccc

Anyone else who wants to find local Python user groups or maybe even present Pythonista to them can do a search at www.meetup.com/find/?allMeetups=false&keywords=python Spread the word...

Phuket2

@ccc, thanks so much. I am an idiot. I should have looked at bkk also.so many guys/gals come to pattaya on the weekends just to escape Bangkok hustle and bustle. From pattaya to Downtown bkk with a favourable traffic time is just over 2 hours. Looks like the organiser is an Australian. But I will join that club and attend their meetings. We be so cool just to be able to talk face to face with someone about Python. Really thanks.

Phuket2

@ccc , are you going to pycon in Oregon?

Phuket2

@Webmaster4o , I agree , go for it. Anything I can do to help I will.

Phuket2

@ccc, ok I signed up now. Also signed up for their next meeting in bkk 10th dec. of course I will have at least 'one night in Bangkok'. Not sure you know who wrote that song, if you know the song you will be surprised who wrote it. BB :)

omz

If anyone wants to present Pythonista at a local Python user group or meet-up, I'd be happy to give you some promo codes for free downloads.

Phuket2

@omz , ok nice. I will ask the organiser of the first meet I attend if he would like me to present Pythonista . Even I am not good enough to understand your code, I have so many positive experiences to share about Pythonista. Is a no brainer. One huge gap in my knowledge is the Xcode templates. I have to get my head around that if I should present. I think many people will be interested in this. I am not, as I am not looking to publish anything on the App Store, but I am sure many are very interested in this topic. But at the moment for the next meeting is only the organiser and me who have signed up. But still early. Looks like they get average 16-20 people attending. But anyone on iOS platform that does not have Pythonista, will do after the evening is out :) next step every single iOS user at pycon 2016 should also have it, then also maybe convert a few others :)

Phuket2

@omz , ok wrote to the organiser and offered to do a presentation about Pythonista.will see what he says. He could be a member here also, I don't know. It's not an issue either way. But it would be an honour to be give a talk on Pythonista. It's possible all members have Pythonista already. Still no problems, then we come up with a wish list for you :) lol. It does not matter, to talk about Pythonista in any context will be fun and engaging.
@Webmaster4o , also if you decide to talk at pycon 2016, you don't have to worry about your audience. It's 10 people or 1,000 ++ people, if you are passionate about what you talk about you can handle the crowd. If for example they all know what you are going to show them, then turn it into a Q&A session asserting your ideas also. Can just have fun with it. Still being serious though. I really hope you do it. Nike!

Phuket2

Ok, so it turns out there is a meeting next week also. 12th November meeting in Bkk. But I will be attending. I have put forward I would like to give a talk on Pythonista, i think I am booked for that. Need one last email from the organiser to confirm I am on. Its funny how things can go so fast sometimes. But looking fwd to meeting people and talking about Python! Thanks again @ccc

Webmaster4o

Not sure I want to go all the way to Oregon and give a presentation, but I'll definitely consider it :). I'd also miss school, and that's about when all my finals will be. Probably not realistic, but it will be fun

Webmaster4o

I think it'd be fun to give a presentation, but I'm not really sure I want to go to Salem this year. Do they have a plan for when pycon will be held in the future?

ccc

They will not really plan PyCon 2017 until after PyCon 2016 but fortunately there are tons of more regional events https://www.python.org/events and http://www.meetup.com/find/?allMeetups=false&keywords=python and https://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups

Phuket2

Ok, I am on, I am sure these guys are hard core programmers :) but it's ok. They welcome beginners and new ideas. I have already told the organiser I can not answer Python Technical questions. For sure I will be the biggest newbie in the room :)

ccc

Congrats! This is great!

You have video-out cables for the iPad to VGA and/or HDMI?!? Ask the organizer to test that the video-out works with their projector/tv before the event starts. An AppleTV let's you run completely untethered if you have one of those and the room projector supports HDMI.

Don't tell your audience that you are a newbie... You have been writing production code for longer than most of these guys have been alive! Our natural reaction is to seriously tune out presenters who start by telling us that they are clueless on their topic.

Instead, just tell them that your approach to coding has changed quite a bit now that you do it more for fun than for earning your daily bread. Talk about your passion for the platform and how coding on a mobile device has different constraints but can be much more enjoyable than being chained to a desktop. Show graphics, ui, sound... talk about your interactions with others in the community on this forum. keep it fun.

Assume that some of the audience will know more than you about Python but not all of them. User groups often attract folks who are just learning. The guys who really know a ton are free to take Pythonista out for a spin and evaluate it on their own. If they ask you questions that you can't answer, encourage them to sit with you after the preso and try out their ideas.

Your objective is just to convince folks to give it a try. After the in-depth discussion on implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery with Ansible vs. Saltstack, your presentation should send the message that folks can also have fun with Python.

Phuket2

@ccc , we are so similar :) of course I would give anyone the advice you have just given me. But I left a few things out. Whilst I told the organiser I am a newbie, I also told him I had in the past a substantial programming experience. The basics are still relevant today, but also I understand a lot has also moved on since I was last programming. But really, I never get intimidated. I never try to be more than I am. I am ok just the way I am. But I have had a lot of practice at it also. Other than just sharing here, also like to show the young guys like @Webmaster4o you can do it. I have been out of business more than 15yrs, but I am still ok to turn up and do this. It's only people. It's not like you are presenting to a bunch of hungry polar bears :) the organiser is not aware of Pythonista, but it could be that every other person that attends have it. But then I will just throw out my outline and turn it into a discussion rather than me try to tell them what they already know.
LOL, just checked the time differences. Will be about 1 or 2pm in Berlin when I am presenting. Going to see if @omz could be online to answer questions from the guys :) will see, maybe maybe not. But everyone always feels good when the developer talks with you!
Regarding the AV, first thing I asked him after he told me he would like me to speak. As long as they have a hdmi port for the TV or projector, I will take my Apple TV and just mirror to the screen. I will also have a back up. When I was younger, also responsible for setting up huge booths at trade shows such as Macworld.
But as smart as I think I am, It still took you to point out the obvious to me about how to meet fellow Python programmers. Again, I really appreciate the time you give to me and others here. I honestly try to follow up on any advise I get here. I value people's time and effort.

Phuket2

@Webmaster4o , that's a shame it's around finals time. Are finals around the US the same time? Given Python is so big in the educational system, I am surprised they would choose a date that conflicts with students final exams. Regardless, I see your point, finals are more important than anything. No distractions needed!

Webmaster4o

If I submit a proposal that gets accepted, can I back out, or am I obligated to attend? I'd be happy to submit a proposal if that doesn't make it definite that I'd have to attend. It'd be nice if I could decide once I got news about whether my proposal is accepted.

Also, finals will probably not be started by the BEGINNING of June, they'll probably start 1 or 2 weeks in. 9th grade finals aren't super important to do well on, either.

The other thing I have to consider is whether my parents would want me to go to Salem for 5 days alone.

Lastly, happy birthday to me 🎉🎊🎁
Fourteen today.

Phuket2

@Webmaster4o , wow happy birthday. 14, well that seems like only a 100 years ago :) really, happy birthday. I hope you have a great day.
The long and short of it is you should not be alone anywhere 5 days by yourself. Could one of your parents or a relative attend with you. I only say, because I think this sort of exposure to crowds of professional people at your age would be invaluable. I often forget how young you are. But of course you should only attend if you have a trusted family member with you. The world is too crazy these days.

deloriel42

@omz a meeting is great - would be easier to organize it in the digital world first.
Hence I am not so far to Berlin - living in Kassel - I am open for a meeting or a small conference.
But my question would be if Berlin has good and cheap locaitons - and furthermore a conference would take quite some organisational skills.

Webmaster4o

@Phuket2 thanks. I might be able to get my Dad to come, but both my parents work full time jobs, and would have to take time off work.

Phuket2

@ccc and @omz And others. Unfortunately, I didn't get to give the talk on Pythonista as planned. It's about 2 1/2 trip into Bangkok centre from where I am in Pattaya. The first 45mins-1hr into the car trip, it was raining and raining. Monsoon style rain. In the end the motor way was just not visible, could only see black as far as the eye could see. It just got too dangerous. If the rain had been like that in bkk as well, bkk would have been flooded and bkk comes to an absolute standstill. So I contacted the organiser just to let him know I couldn't make it. He understood. When it rains that heavy here, it's not just an inconvenience it's dangerous and you easily get stranded. Just point it out, as it might seem weird that some rain can have a dramatic affect. But it really can. I haven't been on the forum, just because I have been sick. Back up and running first day today :)
Unfortunately I will not make ThaiPy's December meeting also. Will have guests from Europe here. From now to mid Jan, will be inundated with friends from around the world. That's what you get for living in a tourist city :)
Anyway, wanted to give you an update. I really was looking fwd to giving the talk. I felt prepared and excited. But the next chance I get, I will do it.
Happy coding everyone
