[Req] iCloud for doc sync

WyldKard

I like and use Dropbox, but it would be nice to have an iCloud document sync method in addition to the current Dropbox support. I consider iCloud more secure than Dropbox privacy-wise, and being able to keep documents synced across iPhone/iPad without having to rely on Dropbox would be nice to have, IMO.

This would be an excellent feature, one that I've been wishing for myself.

Here's how it would make my work much easier:

  • I use Ulysses III on my Mac at the office
  • If I want to keep files synced between U3 and Editorial (on my iPad), I have to use Dropbox
  • But using Dropbox results in some of U3's features being inaccessible. These features are only accessible if I am editing documents that are on my Mac or stored in the iCloud

So having Editorial directly access files stored on iCloud would make my life a lot simpler.

Macmanuk

Having editorial use iCloud wouldn't allow other apps to access the editorial files as iCloud sandboxes them. So whilst it would be good for syncing inside editorial it wouldn't help with syncing to other apps eg U3.

I think we should be clear about the difference between iCloud (pre iOS8) and iCloud Drive

I would understand "iCloud" support as meaning "iCloud Drive" support since the official release of iOS8. Application's that support iCloud Drive store documents in an application specific folder, but I can browse that folder in Finder and on the Web, much as I do Dropbox folders. I can open an application's files in whatever other application can support the file format. I can save Numbers files in the "Numbers" application specific folder, or somewhere else if I want to. There might be other magic that happens by having application specific user files stored in the application specific iCloud folder but so far I have not noticed anything.

This is what I would like in Editorial. Even if there is no application specific "Editorial" folder, I would like to open and save files to iCloud Drive. I, too, use U3 and I think this is what theorginalbudman was talking about.

Would also love to see this. I live in China and Dropbox has been blocked here for the last few months. I don't see this situation changing so iCloud sync would be great for me. Such a pain to sync anything right now!

brianryer hit it on the nose..

Good article on this topic recently appeared on MacStories
http://www.macstories.net/mac/icloud-drive-what-is-it-how-it-works-its-fundamental-problem/

I guess what we're asking for is a file-picker implementation, not that everything else isn't already pretty flipping amazing, cuz it is.

I would like the developers input on this but I believe this still falls under the uncompiled code category. The reason we are stuck with a Dropbox sync script is because Apple didn't like the idea of syncing uncompiled code. I think Codea suffers from a similar disability?! A better sync option is much needed. I've resorted to archiving my script library and using Dropbox sync script to send over a single file as it struggled with folders.

TutorialDoctor

A few days ago. I found a script in the pytniosta forums that allow you to archive documents to a zip file. I modified it as an Editorial custom action. If you use "Documents by Readle" you might be able to save the file there (I have to check this out first), and from there you could sync.

But for local backups (which is very useful) it is still cool.

Check it out

Use the File Bowser workflow I uploaded to open the zip in other apps.

+1 for iCloud Drive support

StrugglingWriter

Adding my vote for iCloud Drive support. :)

nicolasharnois

And another +1 for iCloud Drive support! (the kind of implementation that would present an Editorial application folder in Finder on the Mac)

assistent

Hi, I just registered to add another vote for iCloud Drive integration. So... +1 :-)

ccc

Apple's guidelines do not allow an applications that can run code to download code from iCloud.

See https://developer.apple.com/terms/ for the App Store Guideline and iOS Developer Guidelines

omz

@ccc This is about Editorial if I'm not mistaken, i.e. plain text files... Regarding Pythonista, you're right of course.

Webmaster4o

So, workflows could not be synced.

assistent

Yes, it would probably exclude workflows. Personally, I wouldn't care because I use Editorial almost exclusively to write text with Markdown. I don't want to start another political debate about Dropbox. I do however argue that Editorial needs to implement the Apple standard for cloud syncing if it aims to be about total ios integration.

An Editorial update with icloud drive integration would make this user very happy :-)

johnwhitley

Having the iCloud picker would be great, as that would allow integration with the wonderful app Working Copy, a Git client for iOS that includes an iCloud document picker.

GelatsX

One more vote for iCloud Drive support! It'd be so great.

batmanx

iCloud please~~~~

LennyAbramov

Upvote for icloud support :)

rbnfrngpls

Please add this!
Other Markdown editors already support this.

peterdubbelman

I also look forward to the day Editorial files can be stored in iCloud Drive! It will make workflows so much smoother! iCloud Drive is standard by now and most other editors support it. I love Editorial for its superior design and flexibility, but not having iCloud Drive really is a pain for anyone having a reason not to use Dropbox.

mbarritt

+1 for iCloud and iOS Files app integration - open from in particular, I would appreciate the option (as now works with Byword, for example) to open a .md file from the iOS files app in Editorial (a file stored in the iCloud Drive) edit it, and have it remain in the iOS Files/iCloud space.

silverkors

+1 for iCloud Drive support. To just switch out Dropbox for iCloud sync. That would be great!

heihur

haven't updated for seven months. Please update editorial and add iCloud Drive Sync.

kaschu

and here is one vote more for icloud support in editorial +1
(like Pythonista)

Thanks for the great Apps!

lucasimp

+1 for iCloud Drive support, it would be wonderful

danblondell

+1 on this. Editorial is the only app keeping Dropbox on my Mac.

eddo888

yes please

vaaclav

+1, key feature for me

ChrisHare

this is still a good thing to do. I would really like it.
