For some reason I've always had issue selecting text in both Editorial and Pythonista.
Hard to explain. the behavior other than either it it will pop up the magnifying glass and then disappear, won't select at all, or it will unselect text after I've selected it.

I noticed this happens when words contain various non-word characters like periods or parentheses.
You can select text by double-tapping or by tapping and holding (I use double tapping mostly).
To select an entire collection of text you can two-finger tap on the text. This works for lines and paragraphs.
In pythonista, I often use my editmenu, which has a button which turns on select at the current cursor location. I find select in ios to be horrible.
I've also seen that sometimes when first opening a file, or when the keyboard goes away, sometimes selecting with a long tap hi lights in grey, rather than blue, and brings up only Copy, rather than the usual select menu. Maybe this is what you are describing?

i wish I could cap a vid of it. Most of the time I don't even get a popup at all.
best examples I can think of:
most of the time I can even get it to select,
if i do get it to select, the popup will display for a fraction of a second, then deselects the text.
if i get it to start a selection, as soon as i start to move the lollipops it deselects
when starting a selection, the magnifier will display then disappear deselecting text
if i remember correctly, I've had this problem in Pythonista as well on both iPad and iPhone, editorial as well.
Out of curiousity, what do you have your font settings at? what font, size, and line spacing?

I actually did change my font heading sizes to Apple standards.
H1: 32p
H2: 24p
H3: 19p
I use Palatino 16p for my text font. My line spacing is still at 1 although 1.5 might be good too.
I've seen similar issues (mostly in Pythonista, though) to what kleerkoat is reporting. Sometimes it takes me two or three (or even more) tries to select some text because the pop-up doesn't stay visible at first. I've tried varying the length of time my finger is in contact with the screen to see if that makes a difference but it doesn't seem to. Very frustrating.
i think it might have something to do with the different text heights selected. still trying to notice a pattern.
i have been tryin to find the sweet spot for iPhone and changing them a lot. so that might explain the inconsistency.
what are the default text heights so I can reset them? ty
